Chrome Moly vs Mild Steel: There is a common misconception that 4130 Chrome Moly is "brittle" or will "shatter" when stressed or bent this is false. Chrome Moly is nearly twice as strong as mild steel but can be bent without shattering it otherwise how else would we make K-members out of it? If you were to take a piece of 1.50" diameter x .083" wall Chrome Moly tubing and a piece of 1.50" diameter x .120" wall Mild Steel and bent both with a tight radius, beyond a 90* angle, the Chrome Moly being a harder metal would crack before the mild steel would do the same thing. Why would we compare a thinner wall Chrome Moly to a thicker wall Mild Steel? Chrome Moly has a higher tensile strength and thus why you can use a thinner wall tubing vs the mild steel. Chrome Moly by volume is no lighter than Mild Steel but since it is stronger you can use a thinner wall tubing and be just as strong with less weight.
